Here's a list of frequently asked questions, and their answers.
I'm new to this whole Photoshop brushes thing. How do I get started?
The first thing you're going to want to understand is how to install the Photoshop brushes that you can download from this website. I have a
tutorial that walks you through installing photoshop brushes.
Once you feel a bit more comfortable with that, I also have
tutorials on more complex things involving Photoshop brushes, as well as tips and techniques!
What version of Photoshop will these work in?
Any version of Photoshop from 7 up until the most recent version will be able to use these brushes, patterns, and tutorials. Any version of Photoshop Elements from version 2 and on can use them.
Oh no! I don't use Photoshop! Can I still use your brushes somehow?
Yep! You most certainly can! That's what the image packs that you'll see available below each brush download are for. You download those instead, open them up in your favorite graphics program, and make them into brushes for your own use!
Wow! How do you do this?!
I've got
tutorials that show how to make Photoshop brushes in general, as well as more specific
tutorials that show how I make my "textures" brushes.
When I use your brushes, they just show up in black & white. How do I get them to show up in all the colors like you display them on your images?
One of the beautiful things about Photoshop brushes is the fact that they show up in whatever color you have selected to "paint" them in. However, this makes having brushes show up in multiple colors a bit more difficult. If you're interested in doing that, check out
my tutorial on adding multiple colors to your Photoshop brushes.
Could you make some brushes for me?
I have a fairly backed up list of requests and ideas from my requests page, but feel free to
add your idea in this forum topic here on deviantArt! If you want it more quickly, you could also
make a donation! Anyone that makes a donation of over $10 has the option to request a brush set of their choosing, and it will take precedence over any of my own stuff.
What are the "image packs" that you give links to on each brush set?
The image packs are for people that don't have Photoshop or Photoshop elements. By downloading the image pack, you can open up the files of the exact images that I used to create the brushes. This way, you can make them into brushes that can be used in whatever your favorite graphics program is!
I make GIMP (or any other program) brushes. I'd like to convert your brush sets and make them available for others. Is this possible?
Yes, I do allow people to convert my brush sets into brush sets for other programs, and then to be made available for others. HOWEVER, you must be sure to credit me as either Stephanie Shimerdla or Obsidian Dawn Brushes, as well as provide a link back to this website (brushes.obsidiandawn.com) so that they know where the brushes originally came from and where to find more!
Can I use your brushes commercially?
Yes. View my Terms of Use here. It basically states that if at all possible, credit me in whatever way that you can. If you're a digital scrapbooker, most people list me and my website ( or
preferrably to www.brushes.obsidiandawn.com) in their TOU text file that comes with the download.
I am extremely understanding, however. Some websites don't give you any way to credit others for their contributions to your work. Others won't let you link to other sites (in this case, you could always still list the credit to "Obsidian Dawn Brushes" and someone could certainly search for it and still find me!). Basically, I would much rather see my brushes being used somewhere interesting (I'd love to see them used in a video game or movie someday!), even if it means that the only "credit" that you can give me is word of mouth.
I appreciate whatever you can manage.
