Please do not note me here in deviantArt! I don't check my notes very regularly, and I get a bajillion of them if everyone lets me know when they use my resources. (I do still enjoy seeing how people use my stuff, though, so feel free to comment on my resource or profile with a link to your deviation!) If you have a question or need to contact me, please use the contact form on my website, ObsidianDawn.com.

I'm working on a pretty new journal, skins, custom boxes for helpful stuff, etc. Hopefully it helps everyone find the info they're looking for!

Usage Rules

* These brushes can be used for prints. You don't need to note me and ask.

* If you use one of my brushes/stock, please credit me somewhere. If you use it here on dA, feel free to credit me as redhead stock. However, if you use my stuff anywhere else, you must credit me as Obsidian Dawn (ObsidianDawn.com).

* If you can't credit me, you'll need to purchase a license for just $3. Commercial License info can be found here.

* Please do not re-package any of the brushes contained in any of the sets and attempt to pass them off as your own! As these brushes now work in the latest versions of GIMP, I am no longer allowing them to be converted. Those that are up don't have to take them down, but please don't convert them anymore.

* Webmasters, you may not host these files on your website without my permission. You may link to ObsidianDawn.com (not here at dA) for the downloads, however, without needing to ask.

That's it! Enjoy!

Note: Not all of my brushes and other resources are up here on deviantArt -- be sure to visit my website for everything!

I've got links for Facebook, Twitter, a newsletter, RSS, and all that snazzy stuff on my website, so that you can get updates via any of those routes. So if you want to see everything, I suggest joining one of those. :)

Updating Again

3 min read

So, a couple of years back I stopped submitting my stuff to dA. I went through a time period where I was just overly frustrated with all of my stuff being stolen (others taking my resources and offering them as their own). Most of the people seemed to be grabbing my stuff off dA, so that's one of the main reasons I stopped updating here.

Kind of a silly reason, in hindsight. As if I can stop art theft just by not submitting my stuff to dA.

I wasn't updating much during those few years anyway. Somewhat because life had become busier, and somewhat for the same reason as listed above. But I've started updating more again now, and with a thicker skin. At least, let's hope so.

So, be on the lookout for some updates from me again. I need to submit a few to get caught up first.

PS - I still get too many notes to keep up with, so please email me via my website if you have a question that needs an actual answer. Otherwise, my rules are below!

Obsidian Dawn Updates

Please do not contact me through dA! I do NOT read my notes! You may contact me through my website here. (I have like 3000 notes sitting there from people that didn't read my journal!)

I am no longer updating dA. Please go to Obsidian Dawn to see all my new releases!

Well, first off... you need to know how to make and save your own brushes.  Check out the list of tutorials on the right.  You're going to want the "Creating Brushes" tutorial.

Once you're through with that, you'll need to make your brushes into a ZIP file.  This makes them easier and faster to download.  You can do that using your favorite extraction utility, or if you're a Windows user... just right click on the .ABR file that you want to ZIP up and choose "Send To" and then "Compressed (Zipped) Folder".

The next step is to make a nice preview image.   I make mine 450 X 600, and I'd recommend not making them much wider than that (450 pixels).  Within my preview image, I like to explain what version of Photoshop they'll work in, how many brushes there are, and give my dA name (and website) so that the preview image can't be stolen as-is and redistributed.  If you're not sure what versions of Photoshop your brushes will work in, that's easy.  If you make them in Photoshop 7, they'll work in 7 and any versions that came out after it.  So if you make them in PS CS2, they'll only work in CS2 and CS3, basically.  (I'm not sure about versions of Photoshop earlier than 7, because they were saved in a different file format.  So they may not work in the newer versions at all.)

And then comes the uploading part!
  • Go to your dA homepage (click on your name in the dark bar on the left side).
  • Click on "Submit Deviation" over on the right
  • Put in the deviation title.  Something like "Blah Brushes"
  • Choose the category.  Click on "Choose Category" and select Resources > Application Resources > Photoshop Brushes, then hit "Ok"
  • Click on "Add a file" and find your ZIP file on your computer.  Click "Ok"
  • Now it will ask you for a preview image.  Click on "Choose" next to where it now says "Preview."  Find the preview image on your computer and click "Ok"
  • Now for the comments.  In there, I like to put (again, because a lot of people don't read the preview image) all the information on the brushes... like how many there are, what their name is, what your name is, what version of PS they'll work in, etc.  Also, of course... information on what the brushes are all about.
  • Then type in some keywords that seem to fit your deviation fairly well.  Don't forget to include "photoshop brushes" in there!
  • Select "No" for mature content (unless you're making some pretty darn risque' brushes!)
  • Click on "Choose License" and it will walk you through some questions on how you'd like your brushes to be used.  Whether or not they can be used commercially, shared, etc.  Just follow the questions and hit "Ok" and it will select the right license for you and display it.
  • Make sure that you read the Submission Policy and the Terms of Service, and then hit "Submit" - You're done!
